k club timeline - how the final day unfolded

By Phil Casey, PA Sport

1115: The singles get under way with Colin Montgomerie taking on David Toms.

1150: Stewart Cink strikes an early blow for the Americans by winning the first two holes against the unbeaten Sergio Garcia.

1227: Darren Clarke receives a huge ovation as he walks onto the first tee for his match against Zach Johnson.

1300: Montgomerie reaches the turn in just one hour 45 minutes, and one up on Toms.

1325: Lee Westwood's birdie at the first puts Europe ahead in five matches.

1340: Make that up in six as David Howell leads Brett Wetterich and Jose Maria Olazabal edges in front of an off-form Phil Mickelson.

1345: Europe ahead in seven now as Clarke gets back in front of Johnson on the sixth.

1415: Ian Woosnam must be loving this. His side now lead in eight matches as Henrik Stenson wins two in a row against Vaughn Taylor.

1435: Garcia chips in for birdie on the 15th - but still loses 4 and 3 as an inspired Cink follows him from 25 feet to put the first point on the board.

1450: Montgomerie makes a superb birdie from a greenside bunker on the 18th to seal victory over Toms and maintain his unbeaten record in Ryder Cup singles. Europe now lead 11-7.

1511: Tiger Woods beats Robert Karlsson 3 and 2 to close the gap to 11-8, despite caddie Steve Williams dropping his nine iron into the water on the seventh.

1516: Paul Casey holds off a determined Jim Furyk to record a 2 and 1 victory. Europe lead 12-8.

1540: David Howell fires his fourth birdie in a row to beat Brett Wetterich 5&4. The lead is 13-8.

1545: Luke Donald beats Chad Campbell to ensure the trophy is retained.

1546: Just seconds later, Henrik Stenson holes the winning putt in beating Vaughn Taylor on the 15th green. Europe lead 15-8.

1555: Clarke makes it three wins out of three by beating Zach Johnson, six weeks to the day his wife Heather died from cancer. The tears flow as Woosnam hugs Clarke and tells him: "Destiny, destiny."

1608: Twenty four hours after Paul Casey's hole-in-one on the 14th, Scott Verplank amazingly repeats the feat on the same hole with a three-iron to go four up on Padraig Harrington.

1618: Paul McGinley looks set to win his match on the 18th green against JJ Henry, but sportingly concedes a halved match.

1627: Verplank completes a 4&3 victory over Harrington.

1635: Olazabal keeps Europe on track to match the record win at Oakland Hills with a 2&1 victory over Mickelson, who ends the week with just half a point from five matches.

1650: Chris DiMarco birdies 16 and 17 to keep his match against Westwood alive, but then dumps two balls into the water on the 18th to ensure a repeat of the 18.5 to 9.5 scoreline from two years ago.
