how the europeans performed
Clarke and Olazabal were brilliant.

EUROPE PAUL CASEY Holed-in-one to finish his Saturday foursomes with David Howell and beat world number three Jim Furyk in singles. Two halves with Robert Karlsson. Unbeaten a week after winning £1million World Match Play. 2006: P4 W2 H2. Career: P6 W3 H2 L1 DARREN CLARKE Winner of all his three games just six weeks after the death of his wife. Simply remarkable. Chipped in to clinch second of two fourballs victories with closest friend Lee Westwood and beat Zach Johnson in singles. 2006: P3 W3. Career: P20 W10 H3 L7 LUKE DONALD Disappointed not to play opening session and was not called upon Saturday morning either, but made it four wins out of four with Sergio Garcia in foursomes and avenged 2004 singles loss to Chad Campbell. 2006: P3 W3. Career: P7 W5 H1 L1 SERGIO GARCIA Inspired on first two days as he won all four games - two with Jose Maria Olazabal, two with Donald - to take unbeaten run to nine. Had chance to become first European to win all five games, but found Stewart Cink in devastating form. 2006: P5 W4 L1. Career: P20 W14 H2 L4 PADRAIG HARRINGTON Disappointing week for the local hero individually, but will still take away great memories from Ireland's first-ever staging of the match. Only half was in first day foursomes with fellow Dubliner Paul McGinley. 2006: P5 H1 L4. Career: P17 W7 H2 L8 DAVID HOWELL Might have expected to play more, but was another to finish the week unbeaten. Halved with Henrik Stenson and Casey, then thrashed Brett Wetterich. 2006: P3 W2 H1. Career: P5 W3 H1 L1 ROBERT KARLSSON Deserved to get at least one win on debut. Halved twice with Casey and then had misfortune to face Woods in singles when world number one found his best form of the week. 2006: P3 H2 L1. Career: P3 H2 L1 PAUL McGINLEY Was worried about his form coming into the match, but Ian Woosnam had faith in him and he responded. Half with Harrington in opening foursomes and agreed tie with JJ Henry in singles after Europe had clinched victory. 2006: P3 H2 L1. Career: P9 W2 H5 L2 COLIN MONTGOMERIE Led Europe into battle and was again a tower of strength. Lost opening game against Woods and Furyk, but then had two halves with Lee Westwood and preserved unbeaten singles record by beating David Toms onlast green just as he did in 2004. 2006: P4 W1 H2 L1. Career: P36 W20 H7 L9 JOSE MARIA OLAZABAL Returned for first time since 1999 and was simply brilliant. Twice partnered Garcia to success and in singles defeated world number two Phil Mickelson. Invaluable member of the team. 2006: P3 W3. Career: P31 W18 H5 L8 HENRIK STENSON Topped qualifying table and might have played more, but that just underlined strength of team. Halved with Howell, lost with Harrington, but then sank putt that won the cup against Vaughn Taylor. 2006: P3 W1 H1 L1. Career: P3 W1 H1 L1 LEE WESTWOOD Wild card pick and fully justified it like Clarke. After 4 1/2 points out of five two years ago was unbeaten again. Two wins with Clarke, two halves with Montgomerie and a singles win over DiMarco despite high temperature. 2006: P5 W3 H2. Career: P25 W14 H3 L8
