Woods and Furyk gave the USA some cheer.
Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk secured USA's only point in the foursomes with a 3&2 win over Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley. A perfect approach to the par-five fourth from Woods left his partner with a six-footer for birdie and he holed to put the Americans one up. McGinley then had a disastrous next hole, driving into the rough, and despite Harrington carving it out to the hollow just in front of the green his compatriot opted to putt up and over the hill and came up woefully short. That allowed the Americans to win the hole with a comfortable par four and they held that two-hole advantage until the short eighth when Harrington hit it to seven feet and McGinley birdied. From the middle of the ninth fairway, Harrington somehow managed to fly the green, leaving his partner with no real shot back and, although he managed to stab it on to the putting surface, the 14-footer was too much for Harrington to hole. Woods put the Irishmen under pressure at the 11th by spinning his approach to six feet. Harrington followed him in to 14 feet and McGinley holed for birdie, which was crucial as Furyk sank his effort. Harrington then stiffed his tee shot at the par-three 12th to three feet to bring the match back to one. However, his approach to the next left a lot to be desired and despite Woods dumping his into the bunker, Furyk's escape was good enough to give his partner a five-footer to go back to two up. Harrington flew his second to within 15 feet of the partially-obscured 15th flag, but Furyk holed his birdie effort from further out and McGinley's lipped out. From the right rough at the next McGinley had no option but to go for the green but he fell agonisingly short into the river and that sealed Europe's fate.
