donald/garcia v toms/mickelson
Another superb victory for Garcia and Donald.
Sergio Garcia's run of hot form continued as he and Luke Donald beat David Toms and Phil Mickelson 2&1 in the foursomes. Overcoming a shaky start to share the opening six holes, the European pair were gifted the seventh when Toms fluffed a chip on the way to a double bogey six. The former USPGA winner made amends on the next by following in Donald for birdie but another Donald putt on the ninth doubled the advantage at the turn. Toms had putted well in previous matches and holed from 10 feet for birdie on the 12th and 13th to level the scores, but then bizarrely charged his birdie attempt nine feet past on the next after Donald had left his way short. A half in bogey fours ensued and Toms then carved his drive down the next into the water. Advantage Europe once more. Garcia sliced his tee shot on the par-five 16th and Donald's attempted recovery failed to reach the fairway, but Garcia conjured an approach from a muddy lie to within 18 feet. Mickelson's bunker shot ran 10 feet past and Donald rammed home the birdie putt to go two ahead. A par at the 17th was good enough to seal the win and maintain the European duo's unbeaten record - three foursomes played, three wins.
