stenson/harrington v johnson/verplank

Johnson holed a 15-foot birdie put on the first to put his side one up and then both he and Verplank, making his first appearance of the week, pitched to three feet at the next to turn up the pressure.

However, Stenson chipped in from the front of the green to halve the hole.

At the par-five fourth Harrington chipped out of the heavy rough to three feet but Johnson holed a 16-footer - his third birdie in four holes - for a half.

The Irishman holed from 10 feet at the fifth but again Johnson followed him with birdie.

America's good form finally ran out at the sixth where they could make only a bogey five and Stenson two-putted from 25 feet to bring the match back to all square.

But two bogeys for Europe at the next allowed Verplank to win the hole with a par-three.

Johnson rediscovered his putting form at the par-five 10th, where he holed from nine feet to put the USA two up.

Harrington chipped in from the right of the 15th green but it was worth only a half as Johnson holed another birdie, this time from 16 feet.

The Irishman reached the 16th green in two and he putted up to 18 inches for a birdie, reducing the deficit to one hole.

But after both Europeans missed birdie attempts at the penultimate green Johnson closed out the match by holing from just off the green.
