clarke/westwood v woods/furyk

Starting out in pouring rain Furyk and Westwood birdied the first from nine and two feet respectively. First blood went to Europe on the fourth, where Clarke pitched to four feet.

He played an even better approach to the next and, with Woods out of sorts and Furyk just missing, the home pair moved two-up. Clarke's six-foot par putt for a half on the sixth was just as important and the world number one let the opposition off the hook at the ninth when he missed a three-foot birdie chance.

Clarke, his every move being cheered, pitched to three feet to win the 11th and

Westwood sank an 18-footer to make it four-up with four to play. Although Woods was in water off the tee at the 15th his partner birdied the hole from nine feet to keep the game alive.

Furyk appeared to have a chance to win the 16th as well, but from over the green Clarke dramatically chipped in and that was that. It was the fourth time in six Ryder Cup clashes he had beaten Woods - and for Westwood it was five out of six.
