Westwood and Monty after a dramatic half.

Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie halved with Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco.

Montgomerie missed a six-foot putt at the first for birdie after DiMarco had rolled his in from further out to take the lead.

The Scot made up for that with his approach to the next from the rough to six inches, which levelled things up.

At the long fourth Westwood had a long eagle putt to win the hole and despite missing, DiMarco could not follow his birdie and Europe went one up.

Montgomerie found trouble off the tee at the next and that allowed Mickelson to sink a par putt to win the hole.

Another poor drive, this time from Westwood, saw Monty choose to lay up but almost dump it in the water and they lost to another par.

But Monty bounced back with 20-foot birdie at the dangerous seventh to bring it back to all square.

DiMarco left Mickelson with a huge par putt at the par-four 13th and he could not hole it, putting the British duo one up again.

But when Westwood's tee shot plugged in a bunker at the short 14th Montgomerie could only just get the ball out the trap and USA took full advantage.

The Scot then dumped his approach to the long 16th into the River Liffey while DiMarco's finished 20 feet from the pin, to put the Americans one up.

Westwood rolled a monster putt from the front edge of the 18th green six feet past the hole and when DiMarco missed a 10-foot birdie effort to win the match outright Montgomerie holed for a half.
