Garcia (right) took maxiumum points.

Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia beat Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk by two holes in the foursomes.

Europe were handed the first hole when Furyk put his tee shot behind a tree and his partner could only hack out left-handed.

Furyk had a 10-footer for a bogey five - with Garcia inside him putting for par - but the world number three missed.

At the short third Donald missed the green to the right and then a 10-foot par putt to allow the USA to level things up.

However, the Englishman's 12-foot birdie putt at the par-five fourth put them back in front.

And he produced a superb effort up over the ridge from over 30 feet for a birdie three and a two-hole lead but then missed an eight-footer at the next to

concede to the USA.

Surprisingly Woods then lipped out with a three-footer to hand another shot to

the Europeans, although a poor wedge approach by Garcia at the next gave that straight back.

But a 12-foot birdie from Donald at the short next after Garcia's impressive tee shot restored the advantage, although Furyk holed a similar birdie effort at

the 13th.

Things got worse for Europe at the short next as Woods hit a four-iron to two feet to bring the match level.

Garcia's approach to the 17th finished three feet from the flag to put Europe one up again with a birdie three.

Furyk pulled his approach to the 18th into the water but Garcia almost messed things up by thinning his chip from one side of the green to the other.

Faced with a 25-foot par putt Furyk could not oblige and Europe had their first win of the afternoon.
