1995 - walton sinks states

Walton clinched a famous victory for Europe.

Spurred on by losing at The Belfry two years earlier, Europe recorded their second win on American soil courtesy of a brilliant final-day performance.

Trailing 9-7 going into the singles - despite Seve Ballesteros memorably telling David Gilford how to play every shot in their fourball win over Brad Faxon and Peter Jacobsen - Europe's lesser lights again came to the fore. Ballesteros was literally all over the golf course in the opening match against Tom Lehman, but survived until the 15th hole to give his team-mates a massive confidence boost.

Wins for Howard Clark - with a hole-in-one on the 11th - Mark James, Gilford, Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance set the stage for a thrilling climax.

Nick Faldo gained another crucial point with a late fightback against Curtis Strange, his 95-yard wedge shot to the 18th to save par later voted shot of the year.

This time the unsung hero was Ireland's Philip Walton, who was three up with three to play against Jay Haas until the American holed his bunker shot on the 16th, and Walton missed for par on the next.

Haas could only bogey the 18th however and Walton holed the winning putt to spark mass celebrations, Faldo and Ballesteros crying in each other's arms.
