1991 - the war on the shore

Picture

Agony for Langer after that final-green miss.

Dubbed 'The War on the Shore' in the wake of the Gulf War and Corey Pavin's camouflage golf cap, the stage was set for a controversial contest when a local radio DJ urged listeners to ring the European team's hotel rooms in the early hours of the morning.

With Ballesteros and Olazabal unbeaten, Bernard Gallacher's side recovered from another slow start to be level at 8-8 going into the singles.

After Steve Pate was withdrawn due to injuries suffered in a car crash at the start of the week, Europe made a good start with victories for Nick Faldo and rookie David Feherty, and an amazing half for Colin Montgomerie against Mark Calcavecchia.

Montgomerie was four down with four to play, played them in several shots over par, and still won the lot as Calcavecchia collapsed in amazing fashion.

It all came down to the last match on the course, Bernhard Langer against Hale Irwin.

Irwin's drive was heading deep into the sand dunes until it hit a spectator and bounced back into play, but he could still only manage a bogey five, leaving Langer a six-foot par putt to win his match and force a 14-14 tie which would see Europe retain the trophy.

The tortured look on Langer's face, and the way he won a tournament the following week, will live long in the memory.
